Exercices de style (Exercises in Style) Is a short story, retold 99 times by writer Raymond Queneau. Each short retelling of the same story is recreated a rewritten in different styles over the course of the novel.
I found exercises in style comforting. Queneau shows us in 99 small ways, how style, perception and authorial content coexist alongside narrative.
I had found such approach is valid in other areas of creativity; illustration I feel is neatly supplemented by this technique.
As a musician, (especially a bassist like myself relatively limited instrument in terms of range ) again this novel can be held dearly as inspiration. I feel reminded not to simply embody style as a part of myself, but utilize the execution of different visual vocabulary for different projects.
